M-class solar storm heading straight toward Earth

Sunspot AR1471 erupted on Monday, May 7, producing an M1-class solar flare and an Earth-directed coronal mass ejection (CME), spaceweather.com reported.  The cloud is expected to reach Earth on May 9th at 13:40 UT (+/- 7 hours), Goddard Space Weather lab forecast.

A solar flare is a sudden brightening observed over the Sun’s surface or the solar limb, which is interpreted as a large energy release of up to 6 × 10 25 joules of energy. They are mainly followed by a CME.
